World Music
Unique to HCSMF is our emphasis on divergent musical practices from around the world.
Not only do guest artists from places such as Africa, India, Europe, the Middle East,
and South America present concerts, but students often work with these artists in ensemble
settings. During our 2006 Festival season sitar master Roop Verma premiered his Concerto for
Sitar and Orchestra with a student orchestra.
Students watched as African kora player Mamadou Diabate and Verma later
sat down for an impromptu “jam” session on their respective instruments.

Student groups, such as the electric string quartet, crossover ensemble,
and the Latin music ensemble, explore the intersections between classical music and other
performing traditions. Recent guest artists have included musicians from India, West Africa, Iraq, China, the Andes, and the Balkans.
