- Do I have to participate in district or state festival/competition in order to be accepted?
- — No, students are accepted based on numerous criteria, such as their recommendation,
audition tape, and instrument.
- How will I know which classes are appropriate for me to take?
- — Our faculty members will help you choose which classes to take
according to your placement in performing groups during the class scheduling
session on your first day at HCSMF.

- Is there a way to guarantee acceptance into top level performing ensembles?
- — There is no guaranteed placement into certain performing ensembles.
You must audition when you arrive at the Festival for placement.
There are many opportunities for students perform in various ensembles that
are appropriate for students of all levels.

- How many students usually attend HCSMF?
- — Each two— week session enrolls approximately 100 students.
- Will I have access to e-mail and the internet?
- — There are computers available in the library, where students have access to e-mail and the internet.
- How are the rooms in residence halls assigned? Am I guaranteed a roommate?
- — Students are assigned rooms based on their gender, age, and grade.
Every student will be placed in a double or triple room with a roommate.
- I am on a special diet. Are special meal plans available?
- — The dining services at Hartwick College offer a wide variety of food at
every meal, and are able to accommodate vegetarian diets. Any other special
diets can be accommodated with advanced notice at no added charge.
- Are religious services available?
- — We make a concerted effort to take interested students to worship services on or off campus.
- How do students spend their free evenings or weekends?
- — There are organized sports, recreational activities, and trips planned
during extended free time periods. Students may also opt to practice during free times.
- What arrangements are made for students who need to take medication on a regular basis?
- — The health squad at Hartwick College transports students to and from the
Wellness Center in the morning and evening to take medications.
- Is it possible for my child to arrive a day early or stay a day late?
- — To arrive a day early or depart a day late, students must request permission
from the administration and pay a '75 fee for each additional day.
No student may leave late from the second session since most of our staff depart
the same day as the students.
- What is the average age of a HCSMF student?
- — Though we normally accept students aged 13 and above, the average age of our student is 13-18.
- How do I know what to bring?
- — Items to bring are listed on our webpage. Once you are accepted to
the Festival, we will send you a packet of information listing specific items to bring.
- What is the dress code?
- — Students are allowed to wear shorts and casual summer apparel
during the day. We ask that the students wear appropriate dress for the evening concerts.
Students who are performing should wear white tops and black bottoms or all black
(no flip-flops). Tuxedos are not required.
- Are students allowed to have guests stay in their rooms overnight?
- — No, we are unable to accommodate overnight guests on our campus.
- Does HCSMF accept credit cards?
- — Yes, we accept credit cards. Please contact Festival Administrator Lynda Clark (clarkl@hartwick.edu) to pay by credit card.
